Earlier it was called the Island of Hares, then after its umpteenth name the Island was given the name of Saint Margaret of the Árpád dynasty. The territory of the Island covers 95.5 hectares (38.6 acres); it is 2500 m long and 500 m at its widest point. It is one of the largest tourist centres of the capital, its climate is unique and it is the most remarkable dendrological (botanical taxonomy of ligneous plants) park in Europe. In addition to the natural conditions, the attraction of the district is enhanced by several spas and wide range of cultural and sports facilities. The number of paying guests in hotels, etc. is nearly 200 thousand annually, more than 80% of them arrives to Hungary from abroad, their average length of stay takes three nights. 9 hotels, 2 guesthouses, 2 tourist hostels and 1 camping are of service to the visitors of our district. It is of crucial importance to mention such hotels like the Margitszigeti Nagyszálló built according to the plans of Miklós Ybl, the Hélia and Hotel Thermál as well as the Ibis Volga Szálló built on the occasion of the World Hunting Exhibition of 1971.
The Jászai Mary Square and the building at number 1-3 Újpest Embankment are the pride of both our district and also the capital Budapest for they were declared the part of World Heritage.
